Santa Cruz breaks open close game in second half

SANTA CRUZ — The San Francisco Glens saw their unbeaten streak snapped at four games on Sunday as the host Santa Cruz Breakers pulled away in the second half, 5-1.

Playing without leading scorer Marco Iubel, winger Julio Gonzalez Ponce, and defender Aydan Bowers, San Francisco was not at full strength, and it showed as the game progressed.

The Breakers opened the scoring in the 18th minute when a counter-attack off a Glens turnover led to a 1-0 Santa Cruz lead. However, in the 36th minute, San Francisco drew a penalty kick and Yohannes Harish was true from the spot to level the score for the visitors, earning our Carlsberg Play of the Game.

But Santa Cruz would again take advantage of a ball-handling miscue at midfield by the Glens and convert a 2-on-1 situation into a go-ahead goal just three minutes before halftime.

Three more scores in the final 45 minutes put the game away for the Breakers. Tyler Moss earned Man of the Match presented by Thomas Quinn Law honors for making several clearances and playing with the same intensity to the final whistle.

“I thought we were on them the first 30 minutes, but once the scoreline starts going, it comes down to mentality,” said head coach Javier Ayala-Hil in the postgame Coach’s Corner presented by Rubica. “That's what it comes down to, your mental state in a given match. It's how you keep approaching the game. We have two weeks now to work on that for the next one.”

The Glens missed an opportunity to move into second place in the Southwest Division with a win. Now they continue their road trip on Friday, June 21 at 7 p.m. against the SoCal Seahorses at Whittier College. The team will return to Boxer on Sunday, June 30th against the Ventura County Fusion at 1 p.m.
