San Francisco Glens first-team midfielder Adrian Guzman has signed a National Letter of Intent with the University of California-Berkeley and has begun his freshman year with the Golden Bears.

Guzman, an East Bay native who hails from El Sobrante, played his youth soccer with Lamorinda SC before joining the Glens’ first team in USL League Two in 2019. Despite being only 17 years old, he held his own in the top pre-professional league in America and earned a spot in the midfield rotation from the coaching staff, which included Javier Ayala-Hil and current head coach Jimmy Conrad.

The versatile left-footed playmaker made a name for himself in San Francisco for his pinpoint passing and ball recovery skills, two traits that will serve him well under Cal coach Kevin Grimes. The Bears have four current or former Glens on the roster for the 2020 season, including J.J. Foe-Nuphaus, C.J. Grey, Alonzo Del Mundo, and Francisco Perez.

“I appreciate everything [the Glens] have done for me,” Guzman said. “I started classes on Wednesday.”

In addition to his time with the Glens’ first team, Guzman guested with the club’s youth academy last summer during the now Under-17 team’s run to the Donosti Cup final in Basque Country, Spain.

“We’re excited for Adrian to be able to pursue his dream at the next level,” said Glens executive director Mike McNeill. “We’re also proud to have been a part of his development after the great job the coaching staff at Lamorinda did to prepare him for his time with us and now in the Pac-12.”
