San Francisco equalizes twice to force extra time but concedes go-ahead goal late

SEATTLE — The San Francisco Glens almost pulled off their second shocking result in as many games in last Sunday's USL League Two Western Conference Semifinals but would eventually fall to host Ballard FC 3-2 in extra time.

The home team pulled ahead early in each of the two halves, but the Glens would answer, first on a Diego Grande goal to knot the score 1-1 in the 35th minute, and again in the 87th minute, as a clutch left-footed free kick from Dominic Valdivia again evened the tilt at 2-2.

After a scoreless first period of extra time, however, Ballard FC capitalized on two bad bounces in the 109th minute resulting from a Glens header and Alex Mejia scissor-kicked the ball into the back of the net. Though San Francisco would be awarded a man advantage in the waning moments due to a second yellow card presented to Bailey Letherman, the Green and White were out of miracles before the final whistle sounded.

Still, the Glens have much to be proud of after qualifying for the USL League Two national playoffs for the very first time under Coach Gabe Saucedo. They also won the season series with eventual Southwest Division winners Project 51O and also inflicted the biggest defeat on eventual Western Conference champions Ventura County Fusion 4-1 on the road. The future is bright as the Glens look to their new stadium under construction for the 2023 season.
