Sharabi named head coach of first women’s team in club history

SAN FRANCISCO — The San Francisco Glens Soccer Club today announced their coaching staff for their inaugural 2023 USL W League campaign, which will be led by head coach Mike Sharabi and associate head coach Jessica Hewins, along with assistant coaches Heath Piper, Yvan Trevino and Jovan Yamagishi, and athletic trainer Janet Cortes.

The staff will announce a goalkeeper coach at a later date.

“We’re thrilled to be able to put together a tremendous staff of this caliber for our first season in the USL W League,” said SF Glens executive director Mike McNeill. “From top to bottom, I have nothing but the utmost respect for our coaches who are excellent leaders on and off the pitch as we enter this new era.”

Sharabi comes to San Francisco from Skyline College, where he recently completed his first season as head coach of the women’s program. At his prior stop as head coach of the Foothill College men’s program from 2018-21, he guided the Owls to two Coast Conference Championships, two CCCAA State Final Four appearances in three seasons, and was named Conference Coach of the Year twice.

In 2014-15, he was part of a San Francisco State University men’s staff that led the team to back-to-back winning seasons for the first time in 35 years. He was also the lead assistant coach for the Foothill women from 2010-2013 and helped steer the 2013 team to their only CCCAA State Final Four appearance in program history. At club level, he was Director at Peninsula Soccer Club where teams he coached won 30 championships.

During his playing days, Sharabi earned All-Conference honors at Skyline and later at Menlo College, leading his teams in scoring in all four of his collegiate seasons and finishing with 55 goals. He resides in San Mateo with his wife Gina and daughter Malia.

“I’d like to thank the San Francisco Glens for this opportunity,” said Sharabi. “I am extremely excited to be a part of the club’s inaugural season in the W League. We’ve put together an excellent and experienced staff along with an extremely talented player pool, who are eager and ready to compete at the highest level.”

Hewins, currently an assistant coach for the San Francisco State University women’s program, took on the role of SF Glens Academy girls’ director of coaching in 2022. Previously, she spent two seasons as an assistant at Menlo College and has been coaching at the highest levels of youth club soccer for over a decade, most recently as an Under-17 State coach for the NorCal Premier PDP program that defeated Bayer Leverkusen in the 2022 Gothia Cup final in Sweden. She also serves as an assistant coach for St. Ignatius College Preparatory in San Francisco.

A three-time all-conference midfielder at Humboldt State after starting her college career at Sacramento State, Hewins later competed in the original iteration of the USL W League for the New York Magic and later in the WPSL for Elk Grove Pride. A Sacramento area native, she now lives in San Francisco and can usually be found on the fields with her dog, Luka.

“I’m looking forward to working with this incredible coaching staff,” said Hewins. “This is a great group of accomplished coaches that will hit the ground running as we set the foundation and the tone for our women’s program.”

Piper arrives from the highly successful Bay Area Surf club program, which has developed numerous women’s pro and college players under his leadership as Executive Academy Director. Coming off a 2022 season where the Surf were named WPSL Franchise of the Year in the Pacific Northwest Division, he brings over 20 years of experience to the Glens’ W League staff. At youth club level, his honors include national championships in the Girls Academy League Under-17 and Under-19 Divisions as well as in the U.S. Soccer Development Academy Under-15 Girls Division. Piper lives in San Jose with wife Annette, while their daughter Elle currently plays soccer for Duke University.

Trevino also comes to the Glens from Bay Area Surf, where he is currently the Girls’ Technical Director. The native of Peru brings over a decade of experience from both the collegiate and club level, with stops at Burlingame SC, Manhattan SC, New York Fusion SC, DeAnza Force, San Jose Earthquakes Girls' Academy, Star Academy FC and both Foothill and Skyline College. He is also the founder of 1v1 Training. Trevino resides in San Mateo with his wife Juliana and their beloved dog, Massi.

Yamagishi rounds out the trio of coaches from the Bay Area Surf program, where he is the Girls’ Director of Coaching. Born in Japan, he moved to the United States to play at Hartwick College before playing professionally in Uruguay, Norway and back in Japan. After retiring, he became head coach of both Holy Names University’s men’s and women’s teams as well as a coach for the Earthquakes Girls’ Academy. He also recently served with Hewins on the NorCal Premier PDP staff. Yamigishi lives in Oakland with his wife Jun, and children, Amyu and Reo.

Cortes brings a decorated background in sports medicine, currently as a full-time athletic trainer for Bay Area Surf as well as having experience on staff with U.S. Youth National Teams and U.S. Extended National Teams. She holds a master’s degree from Pacific University Oregon, a bachelor’s in exercise biology from the University of California-Davis, and is BOC-certified.

The San Francisco Glens are entering their first USL W League season in the NorCal Division. Open tryouts will take place February 18 and March 12 at Skyline College. Register now at sfglens.com/tryouts.
