The San Francisco Glens began the 2025 W League campaign Wednesday at Marin FC Siren, drawing 1-1 at Dominican University of California’s Kennelly Field.
The first goal of the season for the Glens came in the 26th minute – Elena Vera started the attack, pushing forward from San Francisco’s defensive half before passing to Lily Bella, who quickly fired an aerial ball ahead to Denayra Villegas.
Villegas then corralled Bella’s pass, discarded her defender and launched a right-footed strike into the back of the net from outside of the penalty area.
Marin equalized minutes later behind a score from Tatum D’angelica, tying the match at 1-1 with what was the final goal of the evening.
Behind the experience of Isa Bañuelos, a goalkeeper for Saint Mary’s University now in her third season with the Glens, the visitors kept the match tied in the second stanza to secure a point on the road.
Every match is crucial in the Nor Cal Division standings, with the two top-finishing teams in the eight-team division advancing to W League Playoffs. Despite an impressive 8-2-2 record in head coach Heath Piper’s first season at the helm – Piper is back in the role for 2025 – San Francisco missed out on the postseason in 2024 after a third-place finish.
The Glens visit Olympic Club next Wednesday at 6:30 pm before their inaugural doubleheader with the club’s USL League Two side at Treasure Island Stadium on May 18.
