The San Francisco Glens defeated Monterey Bay FC II 3-0 on Sunday afternoon, winning the first-ever USL League Two match at Treasure Island Stadium.
Recording a clean sheet amidst the sun and wind, Lucas Jones perhaps made his best save of the game in the 16th minute, diving to his left and making the stop with an extended arm to keep the match scoreless.
The Glens parlayed the stop into the first goal in Treasure Island Stadium history – clever San Francisco passing from Adrian Guzman Jr. gave Isaiah Thomas a clear look on frame, which he converted to put the San Francisco up 1-0 in the 19th minute.
Jones was tested throughout the match, but turned away a long-distance cross and a shot from close-range in the waning minutes of the first half to keep the Glens ahead at the break.
After Jack Grossman entered the match to start the second half and immediately drew a foul in the goal box, Guzman Jr. gave San Francisco a 2-0 advantage by calmly scoring from the penalty spot.
Minutes later, Saul Tecle turned defense into offense, taking the ball from a Monterey defender and immediately scoring, giving the Glens a 3-0 lead in the 53rd minute.
After collecting a 2-1 season-opening victory on the road against Davis Legacy SC on Wednesday, the Glens have six points and are tied for the lead in the Nor Cal Division.
The Glens travel to San Juan SC this Wednesday before returning home next Saturday to face Almaden FC in a matchup of first-place clubs.
