The San Francisco Glens (3-1-0) defeated Almaden FC (2-1-0) in the second match of a Memorial Day weekend doubleheader at Treasure Island Stadium, securing a USL League Two victory to bookend another home sweep by both of San Francisco’s USL sides.
Just as the USL W League Glens had done the match prior, San Francisco’s League Two squad struck first, also in the 3rd minute. Matthew Duggan served up an aerial cross to Saul Tecle, whose half-volley gave the Glens a 1-0 lead and Tecle a goal in two consecutive home matches. In this hard-fought match, the goal proved to be the only score needed for victory.
Duggan and goalkeeper Lucas Jones formed a formidable backline in the first half, with the former using his head to clear away multiple long crosses and the latter recording three saves in the opening stanza to maintain the Glens’ lead.
Each team committed nine first-half fouls as there were three yellow cards issued between the sides.
There were fewer fouls and shots taken in the second half, but Almaden continued to threaten with an equalizer. In the 78th minute, the visitors appeared to have tied it on a header before the raised offsides flag waved it away.
Almaden then sustained its pressure, as a point-blank header from Israel Carillo-Ruiz needed Jones’ fifth save of the afternoon to maintain the Glens’ lead, secure the win and capture his second clean sheet of the campaign.
San Francisco returns to play June 4 against the same Almaden side. Kickoff from San Jose is 7:30 PM.
