Saturday’s 4-3 victory for San Francisco came against a Marin side which played them to a 1-1 tie May 7.

The San Francisco Glens (2-1-1) defeated Marin FC Siren (1-1-1) 4-3 on Saturday afternoon at Treasure Island Stadium, prevailing in a back-and-forth affair in the two teams’ second USL W League matchup of the young season.

The scoring started in the third minute Saturday, as Savannah Leifried crossed the ball in to Leilani Cortez-Ramirez, who then passed it to Alana Owens. Owens controlled and scored from near the penalty spot, adding on to her brace in last week’s victory over Academica and giving San Francisco a 1-0 lead.

Marin immediately responded; two minutes later, a Glens foul gave Tatum D’angelica a penalty kick opportunity, which she converted to even the score.

After a bid from Cortez-Ramirez from outside of the penalty box sailed just above the goal, Marin’s Cameron Colpitts took advantage, firing a strike into the top of the net. The 2-1 deficit marked the first time either Glens USL side trailed at Treasure Island Stadium.

However, San Francisco would not let the deficit follow them into the half. In the 41st minute, Leifried attacked via the left side of the field and connected on a shot which bounced off of the crossbar and across the goal line for the tying score.

Jocelyn Travers broke the stalemate in favor of the Glens to begin the second stanza, dribbling through a thicket of Siren defenders and before recovering a deflected ball and calmly scoring to untie the match.

San Francisco then got an insurance goal in the 73rd minute because of an opportunity created by Anya Lin, who charged hard into the box and passed to Johnson. Johnson then turned and fired in a goal to give the Glens a 4-2 lead.

The cushion provided by Johnson’s goal would prove necessary, as three minutes later Maren Jones connected on a cross by Hanae Kambara-Coughlin from a set piece to trim Marin’s deficit to 4-3. The hosts’ defense held firm in the final stretch to secure the win.

San Francisco’s W League side looks for their third-straight victory next Saturday, May 31, traveling to face the Stockton Cargo. The road fixture kicks off at 7 PM.
