San Francisco Glens SC (2-4-1) suffered their first home defeat of the 2025 campaign Wednesday afternoon at Treasure Island Stadium, falling to the visiting California Storm (2-1-2) 3-1 in USL W League action.
San Francisco struck first in the 12th minute – Savannah Leifried played a cross off of a corner kick across the box, finding a streaking Vanessa Aguilar at the top of the penalty area. Aguilar then collected the eventual Leifried assist and placed her shot perfectly into the left corner of the goal to give the Glens a 1-0 lead.
In her season debut for the home side, Angelena Akanyirige drove the ball up the right wing multiple times, sending an array of crosses and shots into dangerous areas.
Akanyirige nearly scored in the 35th minute, with her attempt striking the crossbar, and after deft footwork from goalkeeper Brooklynn Henderson in her defensive end and a save with three minutes remaining in the first half, San Francisco ended the period with a one-goal advantage.
Henderson picked up where she left off in the second stanza, colliding with a Storm attacker to clear the ball off of her line before making a save with her legs on a point-blank shot in the 47th minute. Minutes later, California took another bid on goal from close range, which the Saint Mary’s High School (Albany, CA) keeper again stymied with a diving stop.
The Storm finally broke through in the 59th minute, as Elizabeth Hutchison laid the ball off to Lauren Hunter, whose strike from outside of the penalty area found the back of the net.
California’s Kennedy Mayo then stole the ball from Henderson in the box in the 69th minute, converting immediately to give the visitors a 2-1 advantage. Efforts to equalize from San Francisco came up short before the Storm’s Susannah Long converted a penalty kick in the 89th minute to give the match its final score.
The Glens travel to the East Bay this Saturday to face the Pleasanton Rage at 6:00 PM, before facing off against this same Storm side next Wednesday in Davis at 7:00 PM.
