San Francisco Glens SC (4-1-2, second in Nor Cal Division) collected a point Wednesday night at Project 51O (2-2-3, sixth in Nor Cal Division), drawing 1-1 at the UCSF Roots & Soul Performance Center in Alameda.
The Glens attacked early, with offense generated in multiple ways by Kian Jones. Not only did he weave through defenders at the start of the match to combine with Saul Tecle for a shot in the penalty area, but his ability to play long throw-ins into the box created multiple chances from the sidelines.
Kian’s brother Lucas Jones’ strong season between the sticks continued Wednesday night, making five diving saves in the first 32 minutes to prevent the hosts from striking first. Project 51O would find the back of the net in the 39th minute but the raised offsides flag nullified the score.
San Francisco then capitalized – Adrian Guzman Jr. scored on a fantastic left-footed free kick, finding the top corner of the goal to put the visitors ahead 1-0. Lucas Jones smothered a free kick from Project 51O’s Roberto Gonzalez in the waning minutes to take the one-goal edge into the half.
The hosts broke through early in the second half. After a shot by Project 51O’s Julio Martinez trickled in front of the goal, Cam Wilkerson’s point-blank shot found the back of the net and tied the match 1-1.
Godwin Antwi continued to use his pace to push possession forward for the Glens, taking the ball from his own penalty area down the sideline in the 66th minute and eventually drawing a yellow card from Emilio Martinez. However, San Francisco was unable to take advantage on the ensuing free kick as neither side scored to wind down the contest.
The Glens now turn to a crucial San Francisco Derby matchup this Saturday, taking on SF City in the teams’ first-ever matchup at Treasure Island. Kickoff for the crosstown rivalry fixture is at 5 PM.
