San Francisco Glens SC (2-6-1) came up short against California Storm (3-1-2) on Wednesday night at Davis Legacy Sports Complex in Davis, falling by a score of 2-1 in USL W League play.
The Glens faced a two-goal deficit deep into the second half and were able to score their lone goal of the night in the 74th minute. Gianna Owens drove the ball down the right wing and eventually retook possession after a successful tackle by Storm defenders.
Owens then deflected the ball into the center of the box, allowing Francesca Johnson to wrestle away possession and fire a firm strike with her left foot, cutting the deficit to 2-1 and scoring the final goal of the contest.
The Daly City native and Sacred Heart Cathedral Prep standout Johnson has netted goals in three separate games for San Francisco in her first season with the Glens’ W League side.
The Storm defeated the Glens a week prior at Treasure Island 3-1 and California’s Kennedy Mayo opened the scoring Wednesday after also finding the back of the net in the previous victory.
Following Mayo’s 21st-minute goal and the hosts’ subsequent 1-0 halftime advantage, Savannah Schwarze doubled the Storm’s lead with a score in the 61st minute.
After playing three of their last four matches on the road, the Glens return home Saturday to take on intracity rival Olympic Club; San Francisco was edged out in a 4-3 thriller May 14 against Olympic Club. Kickoff is at 2 PM for the start of another Treasure Island USL doubleheader.
