Both of the game’s goals were scored on penalty kicks late in each half, including a score from the Glens’ Diego Grande in the 45th minute.

San Francisco Glens SC (4-1-3) drew 1-1 against SF City FC (4-1-3) on Saturday from Treasure Island in a competitive rivalry match decided in the closing minutes.

The USL League Two contest saw both the Glens’ and City’s goals come on penalty kicks at the ends of the first and second half, respectively, as the two sides were able to take advantage of those scoring opportunities amidst strong defense in the run of play.

Both clubs entered Saturday tied for second place in the Nor Cal Division with 14 points – only the top-two finishing teams advance to the League Two postseason – adding to the magnitude of the first-ever playing of the San Francisco Derby at Treasure Island.

City threatened early with a pair of counterattacks, but San Francisco goalkeeper Marcelo Guerra charged off of his line to wipe away both chances as the match remained deadlocked.

Guerra would continue keep the match scoreless in the first half with multiple efforts. After a City free kick struck the crossbar, Guerra turned away rebounds prior to drawing a foul and winning back possession.

Then, in the waning minutes of the half, the Glens were the side to break through first.

After San Francisco drew a penalty kick, Diego Grande calmly found the left corner of the goal, putting the hosts ahead 1-0 going into halftime.

Godwin Antwi, one of three halftime substitutes for head coach Javier Ayala-Hil, provided instant energy to the Glens’ attack, streaking down the sidelines multiple times to create chances.

On its defensive end, timely San Francisco tackles from Federico Barbieri and captain Kian Jones limited City early in the half, along with an impressive defensive sequence in the 60th minute highlighted by an athletic foot-save from Guerra.

City frantically tried to equalize as time wound down, with physical play and crowd involvement playing a factor down the stretch of the contest.

Guerra continued to stand tall; City’s Christopher Mendez nearly scored on a free kick in the 86th minute, but his shot bounced off of the right post allowing the Glens to continue unscathed.

However, as the clock moved into stoppage time, City earned a penalty kick after a San Francisco handball in front of the goal. Diego Guerra converted from the spot for the visitors, evening the match for good with the contest’s final goal.

The two rivals fittingly remain tied in the standings with 15 points each through eight matches.

San Francisco returns to the pitch Wednesday, hosting Davis Legacy with a 12 PM kickoff.
