On a clear yet uncharacteristically still June day on Treasure Island, San Francisco Glens SC (3-6-2) drew with San Juan SC (6-3-0) by a score of 2-2 after a hard-fought Wednesday afternoon match.
San Francisco’s Jessie Halladay scored both of the Glens’ goals while Lena Bailey did the same for the visitors in the competitive and high-level USL W League contest.
San Juan entered tied for first place in the Nor Cal Division and first in the division in both goals scored (32) and goals conceded (six) through eight matches
The visitors struck first in the 12th minute courtesy of Bailey, whose breakaway yielded a half-volley, a goal and an early 1-0 lead for San Juan.
Then, after scoring four times in Saturday’s 8-0 victory over Olympic Club, Jessie Halladay found the goal again for the Glens in the 19th minute. Elle Piper drove the ball down the right wing and lofted in a perfectly-placed cross to find Halladay, whose header at the left post tied the match 1-1.
Bailey collected her second goal of the afternoon quickly in the second half, intercepting an errant pass and scoring past goalkeeper Kaia Tom, who made her season debut for San Francisco on Wednesday.
In the 62nd minute, Tom would make a leaping save, her first of the season, when San Juan attacker Jolie Farmer nearly extended the visitors’ lead with a forceful right-footed strike.
The Glens pressured San Juan’s backline as the half continued – in the 66th minute Angelema Akinyirige swung in a cross for Viet-thy Tran, who almost scored on-the-fly with her right foot but still earned a corner kick for San Francisco.
Halladay would then match Bailey’s brace in the 77th minute.
After she was awarded a penalty kick following a collision with San Juan keeper Abigail Trengrove, Halladay calmly shot the ball into the left corner of the goal to knot the match at 2-2 and give the Cal Poly forward/midfielder six goals in the last two matches.
The sides wrestled through the final stretch and ultimately each collected a point in what is the only match between the teams to be played in 2025. It was also the first-ever W League matchup between the clubs as San Juan is in its inaugural season and their planned May 21 fixture in Rancho Cordova was canceled.
San Francisco plays next Saturday, June 29 in its final W League game of the season. The Glens will host Oakland Soul at San Francisco Glens Stadium with kickoff at 3 PM.
