San Francisco Glens SC (5-2-3, second in the Nor Cal Division) defeated visiting Marin FC Legends (1-5-2, eighth in Nor Cal Division) 2-1 on Saturday afternoon at Treasure Island, picking up their first win in the last five USL League Two matches to stay in playoff position.
The Glens controlled possession early and rushed out to a quick lead, scoring twice in the first six minutes.
For the first goal, San Francisco captain Kian Jones launched a long throw-in from the left wing, finding Godwin Antwi. Antwi promptly knocked in the ball for his first goal this season as the Glens went up 1-0 in the second minute.
Already ahead, San Francisco then earned a corner kick, allowing Adrian Guzman Jr. to swing the ball in for Florentino Junior, giving the latter a look on goal which he successfully slotted home.
Protecting the quick 2-0 advantage, goalkeeper Lucas Jones made two impressive stops in the beginning stages of the match, diving to both sides of his body to keep Marin at bay. In the 33rd minute, Lucas Jones would hit the playing surface and used an extended left foot to stop a low, close-range shot from the visitors.
The University of San Francisco netminder made four saves in the first stanza, and with the help of Glens defenders like Niall Connor and Alexander Tupay getting in front of Legends shots, the hosts took a 2-0 lead into halftime.
In the beginning of the second half there was considerably less offensive pressure from both sides after frenzied attacks for much of the first period. The Glens continued to press as the half went on, earning corners and getting looks on frame, but they were unable to collect a third goal as insurance.
On their defensive end, Kian Jones stood tall in multiple instances, blocking two consecutive shots in the 77th minute and allowing his brother Lucas Jones to clean up the play in goal.
However, the keeper would collect a yellow card moments later, fouling a Marin attacker in the box as the visitors earned a penalty kick. Legends halftime substitute Malcolm Zalayet then converted from the spot to cut San Francisco’s lead in half.
Holding on through three minutes of stoppage time and multiple Marin corners, the hosts collected a crucial three points in the League Two standings.
The Glens return to the pitch Wednesday against Academica, playing the fourth match of a five-match homestand. Kickoff in that fixture is at 3 PM from Treasure Island.
