Legendary boxers, mayoral candidate and fantastic crowd welcome new PDL club

On the opening weekend of Premier Development League action, one of the league’s newest member clubs put into practice all of the work that went into preparing for their inaugural campaign.

In addition to a phenomenal crowd, SF Glens SC drew community leaders, legends and more to Boxer Stadium as the team took to the field competitively for the first time since its establishment this offseason.

“Something that has been heavily discussed internally is how do we make this bigger than just a game?” said J. Ramon Estevez, SF Glens SC President and General Manager. “How do we create a sense of community at the matches? How do we create an inclusive experience? While there is always room for improvement, I think we took a big step towards realizing those objectives. The feedback we've received from our inaugural home match has been overwhelmingly positive.”

“It was an amazing atmosphere, from the pregame presentation to the final whistle. Although we didn't get the result we hoped for, you could already feel a connection between the players and fans.”

In attendance for the Glens opener were numerous community figures. San Francisco boxing legends Karim Mayfield, Ricardo Pinell, Jonathan Chicas, LaRon Mitchell, Martha Salazar and Charlie Sheehy were celebrated on field during the match. Also attending were San Francisco Board of Supervisors President London Breed, District 11 Supervisor Ahsha Safai and Consul General of Ireland Robert O’Driscoll.

Another special guest made the trip out to San Francisco for the inaugural match, as PDL Co-Director Chris Madden was on hand to watch the launch of one of the league’s newest clubs.

“I was incredibly impressed with the Glens opener,” said Madden. “The entire event was amazing, it really felt like so much more than just a match. It was engaging, the weather was amazing, Boxer Stadium is a perfect venue in a perfect location for this club.

“What stood out most was the community support. The teams could really feel the crowd and their singing. Everyone had scarves and balloons and all of the community leaders were so supportive and proud of their team. On top of that, it was a fantastic match with both new clubs, the Glens and Santa Cruz Breakers FC, putting on a great show of skill.”
