SAN FRANCISCO GLENS SC ANNOUNCES TREASURE ISLAND STADIUM GROUNDBREAKING CEREMONY IN SEPTEMBER
Club Completes Phase One of Construction at Waterfront Site; Updated Renderings Unveiled
SAN FRANCISCO (August 31, 2022) — The San Francisco Glens Soccer Club announced today that a groundbreaking ceremony for their upcoming facility will take place at Treasure Island in September.
“We're excited to finally be able to announce that there will be shovels in the ground next month,” said SF Glens SC executive director Mike McNeill. “This is a testament to all who helped us to get to this point, from everyone who have donated so far, to those who aided with the actual demolition, right down to the parents in our club's academy who lent a helping hand when we asked them."
When the project began, there were several buildings on the site, remnants of the U.S. Navy's past presence on the Island. They have since all been demolished and cleared due to a tremendous collective effort, completing Phase One of the club's construction plan.
"We want to again thank the Treasure Island Development Authority for their support and our Board of Directors for pushing forward as we navigated the pandemic, inflation, and other challenges that slightly delayed our timeline," McNeill added.
Featuring a spectacular view of the Bay Bridge on one side and the iconic San Francisco skyline on the other, the facility will mark the first time in The City’s 120-year soccer history that a local club will build one on its own. The updated renderings include a regulation-size pitch compliant with FIFA-certified standards for official games, higher-profile friendlies, and other events. They also include three smaller fields for training and a clubhouse complete with locker rooms, a media room, office space, and more.
In addition to the fields, there is room to build an initial modular grandstand along the touchline with seating capacity for up to 1,500 fans. Other amenities include a press box, lights, concessions, and restrooms. The club has outlined a fundraising strategy for the overall project that will not include members’ fees, but instead, a combination of sponsorships, grants, and donations.
The announcement of the new facility could not come at a more opportune time for the Glens. In the last four years alone, the club’s burgeoning pathway pyramid has added a senior first team in USL League Two and youth academy teams that are Founding Members of both MLS NEXT and the new USL Academy.
Founded in 1961, the club has since expanded from a single amateur team in the historic local SFSFL to nearly 70 youth and senior teams at all levels. With over 1,000 total players, the Glens are now the largest, most diverse club in The City—and one that will finally have a permanent home for its next objective to head into the professional ranks. But the club envisions that the benefit will extend to the greater community.
“A lot of people understandably doubted our project when we first announced it,” said McNeill. “But they'll see now when we break ground that it's real, it's tangible, and with the World Cup coming to the Bay Area in 2026, it has the potential to change the landscape of soccer in San Francisco—not just for the Glens and our pro ambitions, but for other clubs, other schools, and the residents of Treasure Island to use as well."
The date and time of the groundbreaking ceremony will be released next week.
